Windows Phone surpasses BlackBerry in the USA in Q1 2014, Android still king

Microsoft's mobile platform, Windows Phone, has finally seen some increase in its market share in the USA during Q1 2014 – it has grown 1% and now holds... 3% of the market. Still, it appears that this leap was more than enough for it to overtake BlackBerry's own eponymous OS, which now runs on no more or less than 2% of all smartphones in the country. Interestingly, BlackBerry OS had 3% of the same market, whereas Windows Phone held 2% several months ago.


These interesting facts were revealed by Nielsen, a global research agency, which surveyed over 20,000 mobile subscribers in the USA on the matter.

It comes to almost no surprise that Apple is still the dominant player and holds the lion's share of the smartphone market at home. Cupertino's smartphones have been chosen by 42.5% of the surveyed respondents, however, iOS is still losing the battle against Android – Google's operating system runs on the devices of 52% of all respondents. 

If we turn our heads to Androidland, we will barely find anything surprising at all. Nielsen's report shows that more than half of all Android smartphones had the Samsung logo on their front – 28.7%. LG is far behind – with 7% of the market, the other South Korean maker gets the silver medal. Motorola is breathing down LG's neck with 6.8%, while HTC is responsible for 5.7% of all Android devices on the US market in Q1 2014.

Get Sony Background Defocus on Google Play Store



As part of its efforts to move more and more of non-critical functionality to Google's app market system, Sony has published its Background defocus camera mode on Google Play Store. This will make it easier for the manufacturer to iterate over and push changes to the app as fast as it can.

Background defocus made its debut in the camera app of the newly unveiled Xperia Z2. This particular effect, which emulates a shallow depth of field, seems to be getting quite popular, as more and more manufacturers are advertising it as one of the fun ways to use a mobile camera. The effect is mostly applied after the shot is taken, blurring the background and bringing more focus to a foreground object.

With the app now on Google Play Store, Sony has decoupled the feature from the Xperia Z2's firmware and has made it available for other Xperia devices as well. The mode still functions the same way and no new features were added. The mode has to be chosen from with the Camera app and adjusted after the photo has been taken. Sony suggests a distance of about 15 - 45 cm for the best effect.

The Background Defocus effect was actually already ported for other Xperia devices before but now it is official and comes from Sony directly. It still works only on Xperia smartphones, of course, and such devices should be running Android 4.2 or higher to be compatible.

New 5.2-inch Motorola XT912A with Android 4.4.3


New 5.2-inch Motorola XT912A with Android 4.4.3 spotted in benchmark test?

Motorola already confirmed that it would introduce a second-generation Moto X (possibly called Moto X+1) later this year, plus other new smartphones, but it didn’t provide specific details regarding their specs - although we do know that they will offer a near-stock Android experience.

One of the company’s upcoming handsets might be the Motorola XT912A, which was spotted in a GFXBench test today (see the image on the left, and zoom in for a closer look). According to the benchmark test, the XT912A runs the latest Android 4.4.3, and sports a 5.2-inch display with 1080 x 1920 pixels. Other features seemingly include a 12MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of ROM, and 32GB of internal memory.

If the XT912A model number looks familiar it’s because the original Motorola Droid Razr (released by Verizon in late 2011) was - and still is - known as the XT912. Is this XT912A a new Verizon-bound handset? We can’t know for now. In any case, we must keep in mind that data revealed by benchmark tests isn’t always accurate, as these things can be easily faked. So the XT912A might end up being... nothing after all. Until some official details arrive (if ever), we have no choice than to remain skeptical about all this.

How to Dual Boot Android 4.4.2 and Ubuntu for Phones

Testing Ubuntu for phones is now even simpler with an application that is capable of installing the new operating system from Canonical without having to delete Android. Getting a dual boot system in place will perhaps turn the attention of even more users towards the new open source platform for mobiles and tablets.

Canonical has a simple procedure explained on its website on how to install Ubuntu for phones, but that implies deleting Android and getting the new operating system in place. The Ubuntu developers have done a great job so far and the new OS is looking great, but if you decide to return to Android, you will need to delete Ubuntu and install Google’s OS. That means that you will have to set up the phone all over again, which can be bothersome.

Fortunately, there is a solution for this problem and it's called MultiROM Manager, an application developed by Vojtech Bocek. It's available on Google Play and will only work on Nexus 7 (2012 & 2013), Nexus 4, and Nexus 5.

On the other hand, Ubuntu Touch only works on Nexus 4 Phone (mako), Nexus 7 (2013) Tablet (flo), and Nexus 10 Tablet (manta), so unless you have one of these devices, you won't be able to safely do this procedure (it might work, but there are no guarantees and you might brick the device and/or lose all your data.)

First of all, you will need an unlocked phone, which shouldn't be a problem since you already have a Nexus device. You will also have to be root in Android so that you can install the operating system from inside the application itself.

A number of tools will be necessary for this work. First off all, you will need to install ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which is provided by Canonical along with some of its tools. You will have to run a few commands in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:phablet-team/tools
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-device-flash

Now, you will need to download two packages, TWRP 2.7.0.0 and SuperSU binary, which will actually make you root. Copy the SuperSU binary zip to the phone's memory. Run this command to go to the bootloader:

sudo reboot bootloader

Unzip the TWRP files on your computer and install the images with the following command (replace recovery.img with the name of the file you have downloaded):

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Navigate from the bootloader menu to recovery and you will now have TWRP 2.7.0.0 in place. Run TWRP and install the SuperSU binary, followed by a reboot.

You now have root access in Android. Install MultiROM Manager, apply the patches, and download Ubuntu for phones. The application will ask for root access and the installation will go on smoothly. When you reboot you will be prompted with a small screen that allows you to choose what system you want to run. Choose Ubuntu and you are good to go.

10 Awesome Features in MIUI ROM


Clean and Beautiful UI

If, after a couple of months with Android, the black backgrounds and white text in all of the menus start to get on your nerves, then MIUI is exactly what the doctor ordered. It’s gorgeous. And yes, it looks a bit like the iPhone, but that is far from a bad thing. The tabs are cleaner, and all options menus in applications look revamped, easier on the eyes and just plain beautiful. Try to go back from MIUI to a regular Android installation and you will scream tragedy.

Lockscreen


One of the first improvements on stock Android that you will see in MIUI is the lockscreen. It looks different, and finally brings a host of much needed features. Missed calls and new messages are easily accessible from it, even giving you the option to long click to enter the Dialer or the Messaging applications. The lockscreen can also show you a music player widget if you are playing music, and a long press on the home button while locked will launch the flash light. The fact that all of these are accessible without even unlocking your phone is a major benefit.

Themes and Customization


If you have tried CyanogenMod and thought that it was customizable, think again. MIUI brings the concept of themes to a whole new level. You can browse and download from a great collection of themes that change the look of everything on the device: lockscreen and homescreen with their wallpapers, icons, status bar, fonts, messaging application, dialer and contacts, boot animation, and even sounds such as the boot audio, ringtones, notifications and alarms.

Better Dialer and Contacts


We tend to often forget it: our Android smartphones are still “phones” underneath all the shine, and the calling feature is quite important. MIUI brings a T9 predictive dialer, which stock Android unbelievably still lacks, with an integrated call log. The Contacts application is also revamped, looking much cleaner, with multiple lines support for email and web addresses, so they don’t look truncated like on stock Android.

It even integrates the call log, and for the first time on an Android ROM, you can actually add a person to a group and manage your groups with them synchronizing back to Google Contacts (correct me if I’m wrong, but there is no way to do that in the stock Android ROM).

Great Music Player


Another improved application on MIUI is the Music Player. As a matter of fact, it is so awesome, it exists as a separate application for other ROMs . And what makes it so special, I hear you ask? Aside from the gorgeous UI, it can automatically download album art and lyrics for all of your songs. The fascinating part though is that it can play these lyrics, like a karaoke machine, in sync with the music, in the player itself and in its homescreen widget. Sweetness!

Built-in Screenshots


While stock Android users have to wait until Ice Cream Sandwich to get built-in screenshot ability, MIUI has had it for quite a while. Press the Menu button and volume down at the same time, and – ta-da – a screenshot is taken and saved to your SD card. Useful for when you want to brag about your latest homescreen setup or show a friend a cool new application or game.

Integrated Task Management


MIUI offers a couple of ways to manage your background applications. First, when leaving an application, you can long-press on the Back button to totally quit it and not just leave it in the background. Second, when you long-press the Menu key to view your most recent 12 applications, MIUI shows a highlight around those that are still running and gives you an App Killer option to terminate all background processes and free some RAM.

Data Monitor and Firewall


This is also one of the promised features of Ice Cream Sandwich, but if you don’t want to wait for it, you can already get it in MIUI. It has an integrated monitor for your data, WiFi, calls and messages usage, with the option to set a notification when you hit a certain percentage of your allowed Data plan. The firewall is another neat addition that helps you deny access to Data and/or WiFi on a per application basis. These two options bundled together are quite useful if you don’t have an unlimited data plan, since you can keep an eye on your usage, as well as limit certain applications to WiFi-only access, for example.

DND Mode


MIUI comes with a “Do Not Disturb” mode that allows you to block certain numbers from calling or messaging you. This helps you stay focused when you need to, or only allow access to you from your loved ones if you’re busy. It also saves you from installing third-party software to do this.

Custom ROMs are undoubtedly one of the bigger joys that Android users can benefit from. However, rooting your device and flashing these might be a little hard and frustrating for inexperienced Android enthusiasts. Fortunately, the team behind CyanogenMod, which is arguably the most popular custom firmware for Android, tried to make a difference byreleasing CyanogenMod Installer several months ago. This user-friendly tool allowed users to flash the popular ROM considerably easier, however, it is no longer available in Google's Play Store.

Fortunately, a new 3rd party app aims to make flashing CyanogenMod on your device a tad painless.

Meet SMS-Romer, an app that allows you to flash CyanogenMod on your device via a simple text message. Wait, what? Yes, you got it right! Developed by XDA developer rootfan, SMS-Romer is a simple app that enables you to remotely instruct your smartphone to download the latest CyanogenMod build and automatically flash it. In order to do so, you just need to text your device a brief command line and the app will take care of the rest. Simply put, SMS-Romer downloads a CyanogenMod build, reboots your device into recovery mode, and flashes the said firmware. Voila! You've flashed the ROM remotely.

SMS-Romer supports all four types of CyanogenMod builds – be it nightlies, snapshots, release candidates, or stable ones. The app also enables you to remotely wipe your device's cache, Dalvik cache, or user data. As a rule of thumb, you don't need to do so when you are simply updating the CyanogenMod firmware, but if you experience any issues with a given build, it is highly recommended that you wipe everything and start over, so this feature is rather handy.

As you might also know, Google's apps (YouTube, Gmail, Google Play, etc.) do not come preloaded with CyanogenMod or any other custom ROM. This means that you need to flash a so-called gapps (Google Apps) package in order to use them on your device. Luckily, SMS-Romer allows you to remotely do this, either!

Still, in order to use SMS-Romer and flash the custom firmware, your device must be or must have been supported by CyanogenMod. In addition, it has to be rooted and you need to have the TWRP2+ custom recovery installed, as well.

SMS-Romer supports only CyanogenMod at the moment and it's unclear if it will be compatible with other custom ROMs in the future. Be advised that the app is not available on Google Play, so head to the source link if you decide to give SMS-Romer a shot.

NVIDIA Shield 2 to feature Tegra K1 SoC, 4GB RAM, 900p resolution?

NVIDIA's next Shield Android-based, hand-held console appears to be in full-blown testing mode. The device has emerged on AnTuTu benchmark, sporting fearsome specs. The Shield 2 prototype runs on a 2.5GHz quad-core Tegra K1 CPUbundled with a whopping 4GB RAM. Considering that the last console generation had to make do with 512MB RAM, and the current generation Sony and Microsoft consoles have 8GB RAM each, it will be very interesting to see what NVIDIA's mobile gaming technology is up to.

The device has a purported resolution of 1440x810, which probably means 1440x900 (WXGAII) sans the 90px allotted to the Android software navigation buttons. The resolution amounts to a 16:10 wide-screen display of unknown size. We reckon NVIDIA won't go past 6 inches if it wants to keep a sensible handheld profile, but who knows.

Previously, we've seen the K1 SoC obtain a godlike 43,851 result in the AnTuTu benchmark, blowing the Snapdragon 801 CPU out of the water and probably capable enough to beat the Snapdragon 805 when Qualcomm unleashes it. Alas, making such a powerful CPU manageable in terms of energy consumption and heat dissipation is a task that NVIDIA is yet to prove it can handle outside of its test facilities.

Google debuts ART in KitKat, aims to change Android

Here's something you probably haven't even heard of yet. It's a little something that Google engineers have been working on for over two years, which will change the very way your Android smartphone runs apps.

ART, which is short for Android Runtime, aims to replace Dalvik and change the way your Android-powered smartphone runs. Dalvik is the one responsible for running apps on Android. Its runtime uses the JIT complier (Just-In-Time) to interpret bycode, which is a partial version of the original application code. ART uses the AOT process (Ahead-Of-Time) and basically pre-compiling the bycode into machine language the moment an app is installed, making them in essence native apps.





This will eliminate the need for a virtual machine or interpreting code, which will cut startup times greatly. Currently ART is in experimental stages but you can still enable it on your KitKat Nexus device by going to Settings > Developer options > Select runtime. Keep in mind that this will require a reboot and will take about 10 minutes to boot all apps up again. Also don't try this on other AOSP builds right now as it makes the OS crash and become unusable.

Initial observations show that execution time on most apps has been cut in half. And once Google gets around to making ART official, the runtime process would be market ready and much faster.

The compromises with this method of running apps is that each app would take a longer time to install, which isn't ideal if you're coming from a backup and are waiting for loads of apps to install. Also the app would consume more storage because the bycode is being fully compiled - around 10% to 20% more.

Still if ART proves ready for prime time it would promise better app loading times, increased battery life and superior multitasking. For a more detailed explanation visit the source link.
